AG’s office: ‘Blackmail’ was not a conclusion Wickenburg Mayor Everett Sickles last week publicly reported the Arizona attorney general told him that blackmail exists in Wickenburg (see March 21 story in the Sun), however a spokesman for the AG’s office later told the Sun, Sickles was told nothing of the sort and Sickles has not talked to the attorney general. Meanwhile, Wickenburg Town Council voted during its last meeting to have a discussion about the mayor’s visit to the AG’s office during the April 2 council meeting. AG Communications Director Ryan Anderson confirmed that Sickles did go to the AG’s office on March 5 and that he did talk to agents there while filing a complaint asking for a criminal investigation. Anderson however refuted Sickles’ recent implication during the March 19 town council meeting that he had talked to the attorney general directly, and Anderson also refuted Sickles’ claim that he was advised by an agent in the AG’s office that blackmail exists in Wickenburg. This exchange is the latest in a continuing story in which the mayor and some of his supporters for close to a year have alleged the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce misused marketing funds provided to the chamber by the town of Wickenburg. Following an audit last fall, the chamber was required to reimburse some of the funds, and the contract was revised to clear up vague language. When town council approved the reimbursement and new contract in February, Sickles voted against it, attempted to overturn the decision and stated he would take the issue to a higher authority. On March 5, he filed a complaint with the attorney general’s office, and on March 12 the attorney general’s office issued a letter to him stating a criminal investigation would not be conducted. The Wickenburg Sun obtained confirmation of his complaint and the response letter through a public records request. Sickles addressed the issue during the March 19 town council meeting with lengthy remarks (see March 21 Sun or www.wickenburgsun.com ). Sickles stated, in part, that he had been told by the attorney general that blackmail existed in Wickenburg, due to the chamber having issued a letter to a former member explaining that unless the membership was renewed, the business would not be promoted by the chamber and visitors would be directed elsewhere for services. After the Sun’s deadline last week, Anderson replied to the Sun saying, “I can’t speak to what the mayor did or did not say at council. While the mayor may have expressed his personal opinions about what he felt was going on with the Chamber of commerce, there was definitely no “conclusion” that there was blackmail in Wickenburg by any AG staff. And to be clear, the mayor has never spoken to the attorney general about this or any other related matter.” The conversation regarding the mayor’s visit to the AG’s office is set to continue during the April 2, council meeting which will take place at 5:30 p.m.
